You’re Not Overthinking. You’re Regulating

Let’s start with what we think overthinking is.

We call it overthinking when we’re thinking more than required or more than we can handle. We notice ourselves spiraling, trying to find answers to more and more questions that keep emerging.

In those moments, it almost feels like you’re in a parallel world. You can’t really relate to other people. And sometimes, you even rationalize it by telling yourself that you understand the problem better than anyone else.

It’s usually when someone says, “you’re overthinking this,” that you realize how deep you are in your thoughts, and how stuck the loop feels.

We want to come out of overthinking because it’s rarely useful.
It makes us anxious, pulls us into imagined scenarios that may never happen, and keeps us constantly on edge.

And all of this happens just to feel cautious, safe, and in control.

Overthinking Is Your Mind Trying to Feel Safe

Your brain is always working to keep you safe and familiar.

When situations feel uncertain or out of control, your mind responds with:

“Let me think a little more. If I can figure this out, I’ll feel safe.”

This is not random.

This is your system trying to regulate you.

If your body doesn’t feel safe, your mind steps in and tries to create safety through thinking by analyzing, predicting, and trying to reach certainty.

But here’s the reality:

No matter how much you think,
you will never reach 100% certainty.

Life is unpredictable.
Things won’t always go the way you want.

And that’s exactly where the loop gets stuck.

Why Overthinking Doesn’t Work

Overthinking feels like control but it doesn’t actually create safety.

Instead, it keeps your system activated:

You end up feeling more overwhelmed, not less.

So even though overthinking is trying to help you regulate stress, it ends up doing the opposite.

So How Do You Actually Feel Safe?

The question then becomes:

If thinking doesn’t create safety, what does?

The answer is not in eliminating uncertainty.

It’s in learning how to be with it.

This is where your nervous system comes in.

Real regulation is not about removing discomfort.
It’s about expanding your capacity to tolerate distress without losing yourself in it.

A Different Way of Responding

Think about this:

Would you rather:

In both cases, you might still get through it.

But your internal experience is completely different.

That difference is regulation.

You Don’t Need to Stop Overthinking..

You don’t need to force yourself to stop overthinking.

You need to understand what it’s trying to do for you.

Overthinking is not the problem.
It’s your system trying to help you feel safe.

And once you start working with your nervous system instead of against it,
you don’t need to rely on thinking as your only way to cope.

This is not the only way your system tries to regulate you.
There are many subtle patterns your body picks up on before your mind does.

I’ve written more about that here: Things you may not be aware of (but your body knows)
